Bridging the Gap: Supporting Executive Function with School-Wide Planners

As a middle school English language arts teacher, I see my students’ potential everyday. However, many struggle with executive functioning which leads to missed deadlines and academic stress. For CEP 822 Aproaches to Educational Research, I developed an Action Research Plan to implement a standardized, school-wide planner to move from chasing missing work to empowering student success,

Research

To ensure this initiative was grounded in evidence, I compiled an Annotated Bibliography of ten academic articles. This deep dive explored:

  • Scaffolding: How planners act as an external support for the developing adolescent brain.
  • Instruction: The necessity of explicitly teaching organizational habits rather than just providing the tool.
  • Equity: Strategies for supporting students in Title I contexts who manage high cognitive loads.

Next Steps

The research confirms that for 6th graders, organization is not just a soft skill — it is a prerequisite for learning. I have already reached out to Meridan Planners for a quote and am currently drafting a formal proposal for my school administration, backed by the data found in this project.
